My Granny's story - Poppy

THE STORY OF LIFE!
My Granny, Kathleen Aleena Talbot, later to be known as Kathy or Susie ,was born on the 7th of October 1947 in the Dunedin hospital. She has 3 brothers. One named Kenneth - known as Kenny ,
Granny - Known as Kathleen , Kathy or Susie , Lindsay - Known as Manny and Donald - Known as Donald.

She lived in Waikouaiti a small town just out of Dunedin where her father William also known as Bill, worked in his butcher shop W. Talbot butcher. My Granny had a way different life to us, I mean firstly they had a long drop toilet which was outside. They used to dig a hole and place a bucket in it and then they cut up newspaper and used it as toilet paper but their dad Bill had to clean out the toilets every night and I bet that it was horrible. Secondly milk in the shop was a no go so they had to get milk from their cow. They would milk it daily for the usual tea or coffee.

She went to school and made it all the way through primary school but six months until she was due to leave primary school they moved 7km out of Timaru to a farm. She went to high school and left at 16 and went to work at a office as an office girl for a company called Wright Stevensons. The company dealt with selling sheep and cattle. She did typing and answering the phone. There she meet my  Grandad,Richard. Later in life they got married on the 22nd of March 1969 but then on 1970 my Granny had her first baby Stephen. Then in 1972 another baby was born. Her  name was Erin. Things were all happy and good for 3 more years until in 1975 when Stephen  was five and Erin was 3 , last but not least another baby was born my Mum ,Kim. Soon  after in 1976 in Australia there was a flood and my grandad who was a farmer had too save his sheep. He said goodbye to his kids and his wife and left. A few hours later there was a knock on the door and some police were standing there looking all sad. My granny asked what they were here for then they started to say " we are very sorry to say but we think your husband Richard has died, We think he drowned but he might wash up on shore. We hope that you will be okay" they said then they left. My granny burst into tears. So now let's fast forward a we while further. This is were my Granny was brave enough to pick up the pieces to visit the place were her loving husband and also a kind father's death place. It wouldn't have been easy but here she is now a Granny to 9 beautiful grandchildren and which one of them is me.

I hope that this story is fun to read but most of all a story of learning were sometimes times are rough but you will still make it in the end.
